Nike's "Just Do It" slogan is probably one of the most successful marketing devices ever created. It is only 3 words, but it sends an incredibly clear and effective message. I consider those 7 letters to be perhaps the best summary of motivation in existence. No matter what your reason is to act, whether it is exercise or selling real estate, Just Sit There will not get the job done.
One of the biggest mountains I had to climb as a broker was teaching an agent an awesome new skill or technique, having them leave the office filled with piss and vinegar, and then a week later hearing them give me a milquetoast excuse about why they haven't gotten around to deploying the plan.
In the first year my brokerage was in business, I worked from home. This was 2005, so home- based work was not unheard of, but it was not nearly as prevalent as today. Once, someone told me they didn't know how I did it. "I'd never get anything done!" they said. "You have so much discipline!"
I said "I don't have much discipline. I have bills."
That was pithy, but my real inspiration was my children. We had 3 toddlers and one in the oven, and what got me off my ass was my fervent desire to be good provider.
Simply put, my children were my Big Why. They were why I did things that were uncomfortable. They were why I stayed up late writing blog posts and making mailers for expired listings. They were why, years later, I crafted a divorce agreement that enabled me to see them every day, not just every other weekend and one weeknight.
You manager and your coach can't get out there and do the work for you. We can empower you, inspire you, teach you, motivate you, and much more, but we can't do the work. But what you can do to get in action is figure out what gets you up and going- The Big Why.
Figure out your Big Why and you may find yourself just doing it.
